Sharing My Homey Springtime To-Do List
All of the positive things I'm planning to do around the house this season to distract myself from negativity.
I never used to describe myself as depressed, but I’ll be honest…It has been harder and harder to keep my chin up these past five years. Since COVID, John and I have both experienced serious unexpected health issues, we had to say goodbye to five of our beloved pets, and the pandemic had a huge impact on the scale of my small business that I’m still trying to recover from. Oh, and, politically, our nation looks like a circus act! I truly can’t process all of the nonsense coming out of our government right now.
Suffice it to say, I’m ready to embrace the brand new spring season this week. There’s something so refreshing about this time of year and all of the newness that it brings. It’s a literal breath of fresh air, and I’ve decided to take it as my opportunity to reframe my attitude.
Sure, John and I have been through a lot these past few years, but I know we’re not alone, and I also know that it could be a lot worse. It’s time for me to focus on the good in life and to kick this depression to the curb by committing to more creative activities, movement (preferably outside), and lighthearted self care. Keep scrolling to read the springtime to-do list that I’ll be following to get out of this sad little funk I’ve been in.
My homey springtime to-do list:
Weekly morning yoga sessions in the brightest rooms of our house (mix up locations so it never feels stale!).
Daily guided meditations in my favorite lounge chair, possibly two sessions if the day is especially full of angst—I swear by the Calm app, by the way!
Afternoon walks around our quiet little neighborhood with our rescue pup.
Experiment with new-to-us springtime recipes with a focus on baking because that’s something I’ve been meaning to get better at.
Perfect the organization in our most overflowing closets.
Do more DIY home decor projects just for fun.
Set up an at-home throwing pottery studio in our basement.
Draw more!
Rearrange rooms to give our spaces new perspectives.
Listen to more music throughout the day. I spend too many days in near complete silence.
Paint our bathroom a new bold color to freshen it up.
Make a spring/summer reading list and stick to it (but don’t treat it like a sprint—savor each book).
Finish a puzzle.
Invite friends over to spend time in this home that we’ve worked so hard to decorate.
Sign up for a new class, whether it’s out in the community or online so I can do it from home. I really thrive in a classroom environment.
Plant an herb container garden on the back porch.
Do more at-home wine tastings as opposed to spending lots of extra money at fancy wineries.
Plan a spa night at home.
Open up the sleeper sofa in the living room, dress it with our softest springtime linens, and watch a movie that we’ve never seen before.
Kick off a season-long back yard frisbee golf tournament.
Just the simple act of drafting that list makes me feel positively giddy about officially embrace spring tomorrow. Are there certain things that you hope to accomplish this new season? Maybe a few better habits that you’d like to adopt? Routines you’d like to break? Comment and let me know what you have planned for spring, or give this post a “like” if you’re just excited to see what the season has to bring.
Things worth mentioning this week…
New On The Blog: Yesterday, I shared my tips for protecting your couch from pets using our favorite removable, washable sofa covers. We've used these for years on both of our main sectional sofas and still love them.
What I’m Watching: I’m currently rewatching Schitt’s Creek in the evenings on Prime Video, and it’s bringing me so much joy. That show is hysterical but also surprisingly heartwarming, don’t you think? If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend diving in.
What I’m Reading: I’m still reading Heir of Fire, part of the Throne of Glass series. For some reason, I’m finding it a little hard to get into, but I’ve also been overwhelmed with stressful work and personal life stuff lately, so maybe I’m just too distracted to really appreciate it? I do still love the series, and hope to wrap this one up by week’s end so I can crack into something different for a breather. Maybe an unfussy beach read? What’s your favorite lighthearted book? Comment and let me know!
Noteworthy Substack: If you’ve been struggling to get back into a good sleep routine ever since the time change, then this Substack from Camille Styles will hit the spot. I love her suggestion for sleeping in a cool space (I keep our own bedroom at a chilly 61 degrees!), and her tips for reducing screen time in bed have encouraged me to follow suit. Read the post here: My Sleep Toolkit (Or, How to Get the Best Sleep of Your Life)
Favorite Recent Purchase: I don’t have a link for you because it was secondhand, but I scored the sweetest little vintage winged side table at Goodwill over the weekend. I’m planning on refinishing the table since there’s some water damage to contend with, and I just ordered this handle to replace the dated crooked one that the table came with. Stay tuned for the before/after transformation soon…
Looking Forward To: I’m pretty proud of how well I mentally embraced winter this time around, but I’m still really excited to welcome a new season tomorrow. I can hardly wait to be able to read a book in the backyard under the shade of a leafy tree, and to break out my favorite floral print sundresses again. It’s gonna be a good one.
